Hiroshi Yokota

ACF President, Japan

 

 Topic titled: Considerations for Life-Cycle of Concrete Structures

Dr. Hiroshi Yokota is a Professor of Faculty of Engineering at Hokkaido University in Japan. He received his PhD from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. He had worked for Ministry of Transport and Port and Airport Research Institute, Japan and then was appointed to a professorship in 2009 at the university. He serves as President of Asian Concrete Federation (ACF).

His recent research interests include the life-cycle management of civil infrastructure including durability design, performance evaluation, prediction, assessment and interventions as well as sustainability design of concrete structures. He is now a convener of ISO/TC71/WG1 “Life-cycle management of concrete structures.”

He has published more than 250 international journal and conference papers in English and more than 160 refereed domestic papers.

David A. Lange

ACI President, USA

 

Topic titled: Advancing Concrete Sustainability through Recycling

David A. Lange is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  His research area is concrete materials, microstructure-property relationships, airport pavements, concrete rail crosstie durability, foamed cement materials, and recycled concrete. He serves as Director of the Center of Excellence for Airport Technology, a research center sponsored by the O’Hare Modernization Program and the Federal Aviation Administration. Lange has published over 100 technical papers and reports, including over 90 refereed journal papers.  He is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society.   He is also a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute and winner of its Wason Medal in 2003 and 2018.  He serves as President of ACI, member of the ACI Board of Direction, past chair of the ACI Technical Activities Committee, and has served ACI in many other roles.

Civil Engineer, MSc and PhD from the Technical University of Madrid. Doctor Honoris Causa from the Technical University of Bratislava. Professor of Structural Concrete and Conceptual Design of Structures at the School of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid. President of fib (International federation of concrete). Former president of ACHE (Structural Concrete Scientific Association of Spain). Member of the team that prepared Eurocode 2 (Structural Concrete). He was member of the fib Special Activity Group 5 (Model Code for Concrete Structures, 2010) and at the moment member of fib COM10 Model Codes. Member of different Spanish committees for the development of codes and regulations. Author of several papers and books. Founder of FHECOR Consulting Engineers, www.fhecor.es. Erik Schlangen

Rilem Honorary President for 2018

 Topic titled: "Micro-scale testing and 3D printing for validating multi-scale modelling of concrete"

Dr. Erik Schlangen is Professor in the chair of “Experimental Micromechanics” at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology and he is director of the Microlab for micromechanical and material research. He is specialized in fracture mechanics of quasi-brittle materials like concrete, durability mechanics, finite element modelling, design of experimental techniques and self-healing of concrete and asphalt. He is the inventor of the Delft lattice model for simulation of fracture. He initiated the self-healing bacterial concrete and is the inventor of the self-healing asphalt with steel-wool and induction heating that is applied in several applications. In 2018 Erik Schlangen is the honorary president of RILEM.

Khaled Sennah

Ryerson University, Canada

 Topic titled: "Development of Design Standards for Steel-Reinforced and GFRP-Reinforced Concrete Bridge Barriers and Deck Slab Overhang"

Dr. Khaled Sennah is a Professor of Structural Engineering and the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department, Ryerson University, Canada. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in civil engineering from Alexandria University of Egypt, and Ph.D. degree in structural engineering from University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Sennah has 33 years of research, teaching and industrial experience in the area of structural engineering. His core area of expertise includes design, evaluation, retrofit and rehabilitation of bridges. Dr. Sennah has demonstrated numerous evidences of impact and contribution to economical design and sustainable construction that led to field applications and standards. His major research collaborator is Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) with which his research was implemented in Ontario bridges. He has published more than 250 publications and supervised over 75 graduate students. His research was recently recognized by receiving three prestigious awards for best journal papers. In 2013, he received the A. B. Sanderson Award for a Canadian civil engineer who has made particularly outstanding contributions to the development and practice of structural engineering in Canada. Dr. Sennah is a member of technical committees and subcommittee with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and American Concrete Institute (ACI) and. Dr. Sennah is an elected Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE).

Jinguang Teng

Academician, Southern University of Science and Technology, China

Topic titled: "Innovative Hybrid Structures Enabled by Emerging Structural Materials"

Professor Jin-Guang Teng is a Vice-President of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and a Chair Professor at both SUSTech and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (factional appointment). He is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor Teng has conducted research on a wide range of topics across the broad field of structural engineering, including the structural use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in construction as well as steel and thin-walled structures. He has authored/co-authored over 200 SCI journal papers, leading to over 9,500 citations and an H-index of 50 according to the Web of Science Core Collection. Many of his research findings have been adopted by relevant design codes/guidelines in China, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. His research contributions have been recognized by many awards and prizes, including the State Natural Science Award of China, Distinguished Young Scholar Award from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the IIFC Medal from the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), and the State-of-the-Art of Civil

Surendra P Shah

Northwestern University, USA

Topic titled: Meta Concrete and Nanotechnology

Walter P. Murphy Emeritus Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Northwestern University

Professor Surendra P. Shah is a Walter P. Murphy Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering and was the founding director of the pioneering National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials. His current research interests include: fracture, fiber-reinforced composites, nondestructive evaluation, transport properties, processing, rheology, nano-technology, and use of solid waste materials. He has co-authored two books: Fiber Reinforced Cement Based Composites and Fracture Mechanics of Concrete. He has published more than 500 journal articles and edited more than 20 books. He is past editor of RILEM's journal, Materials and Structures.

Professor Shah is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He is also a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Indian Academy of Engineering, and the only civil engineer who is a member of these three academies. He has received many awards, including the Swedish Concrete Award, American Concrete Institute's Anderson Award, RILEM Gold Medal, ASTM Thompson Award, American Society of Civil Engineer's Charles Pankow Award, and Engineering News Record News Maker Award. He was named one of the ten most influential people in concrete by Concrete Construction Magazine. He has been awarded an honorary membership in American Concrete Institute and RILEM (based in Paris).

In 2007-2008 he spent time at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai as an Honorary Professor under the auspices of a Fulbright grant and in 2014 he received a Fulbright Senior Lecturer award to spend five months at IIT Madras.  

Besides teaching at Northwestern University, Professor Shah has taught at the University of Illinois Chicago and served as a visiting professor at MIT, University of Sydney, Denmark Technical University, University of Singapore, Darmstadt University, Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees, Paris, and University of Houston.

Currently, he is a member of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and an honorary professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dalian Maritime University,  Nanjing Technical University, South East University, Nanjing, and a Distinguished Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India.

Jongsung Sim

Hanyang University, Korea

 

Topic titled: A Summary of Sustainable Concrete Technology in Last Three Decades

Dr. Jongsung Sim is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering at Hanyang University in Korea. He has been faculty member at Hanyang University since 1987. He received his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University in United State. He served President of Asian Concrete Federation (ACF) in 2009, President of Korean Concrete Institute (KCI) in 2011 and President of Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE) in 2013. He is Fellow Member of American Concrete Institute (ACI), Fellow Member of International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), and Fellow Member of International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). He is a Member of National Academy of Engineering in Korea (NAEK). He is currently serving as Chairman of several Governmental Committees regarding Korean Standards (KS) and working as convener of ISO standards regarding concrete structures. His research field includes Use of FRP Rebar for Sustainable Concrete Structures, FRP reinforcement of existing concrete structures, Use of Recycled Waste Concrete, Use of Magnesia Concrete for Repair of Concrete Structures and so on. He has more than 140 international publications and more than 270 domestic publications in these research fields.

Caijun Shi

ACF Vice-President, China

Topic titled: "Mixture Proportioning for Alkali-activated Materials "

Dr. Caijun Shi is currently a Chair Professor of College of civil Engineering, Hunan University and China Academy of Building Materials Academy. He received his B. Eng and M. Eng from Southeast University, Nanjing, China and his Ph.D from University of Calgary, Canada. He has authored/coauthored more than 250 technical papers, five English books, two Chinese books and edited/co-edited five international conference proceedings. In recognizing his contributions to researches in waste management and concrete technology, he was elected as a fellow of International Energy Foundation in 2001, a fellow of American Concrete Institute in 2007, and a fellow of RILEM in 2016.

Yinwen Chan

Topic titled: "Flexural Behavior of a Full-scale Prestressed UHPC Box Girder"

Dr. Yinwen Chan is a professor in Department of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University. He received his B.S. in 1986, M.S. in 1988 in National Taiwan University and PhD in 1994 in the University of Michigan. He is the Vice President of Taiwan Concrete Institute since 2017, Vice President of Asian Concrete Federation since 2017, and EC Member and Treasurer, Asian Concrete Federation since 2011, President of Taiwan Construction Research Institute in 2011-2015, Executive Director of Chinese Society Structural Engineering in 2007-2012, Director of the Center for Earthquake Engineering Research in 2006-2009.


Peiyu Yan

Tsinghua University, China 

 

 

Topic titled: "Pumping Process of High Strength Self-consolidating Concrete in the Construction of Skyscraper"

Dr. Peiyu Yan is a professor in Institute of Building Materials, School of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University. He received his bachelor degree in 1982, master degree in 1984 and doctor degree in 1988 in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Wuhan University of Technology, China. His major research area is in cementitious materials, which includes the relationship of composition, formation of microstructure and properties of binders (cement, pozzolanic materials); novel binders; preparation and properties of high performance concrete; durability of concrete. He has been responsible for several state-key research projects in recent years. He has published over 300 professional papers and one book.

Weiliang Jin

Zhejiang University, China

 

 

 Topic titled: Progress on Durability of Concrete Structures and its Application”

Dr. Wei-Liang Jin is a Professor of Structural Engineering at Zhejiang University where he served as the head of Institute of Structural Engineering. He was awarded his PhD degree in Dalian University of Technology in 1989. Then he was awarded a Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship at the University of Stuttgart from1991 to 1993. Dr. Jin also spent a year at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology with the funding support from Norway Research Council from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Jin commenced his academic career at the Zhejiang University, where he rose to the rank of Professor in Structural Engineering in 1996. Author of more than 400 research papers, Professor Jin continues active structural research and is on the board of several academic journals. He is also the members of editorial committee of several national structural technological standards, and the founder and current editor in chief of International journal of structural engineering. Professor Jin is a Fellow of Institute of Civil Engineering, UK, China Ocean Engineering Society and China Society of Civil Engineering. Professor Jin’s main research areas lie in the reliability and durability of concrete structures and offshore structures as well as Chinese higher education

Jiaping Liu

Prof. Liu, born in 1967, Nantong, Jiangsu Province, China, professor of Southeast University, winner of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Changjiang Scholar. His research area includes high performance concrete, cracking and deformation of cementitious materials and concrete durability.

Jianzhuang Xiao

Tongji University, China

Topic titled: "Advances in study of recycled aggregate/powder concrete in China

Dr. Jianzhuang Xiao is the Head of Structural Engineering Department, Tongji University. He has been engaged in the fundamental research on material properties and structural behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete for more than 15 years. He was awarded the Distinguished Young Scholars of China by the National Natural Science Foundation of PR China and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellowship in Germany. He has won 3 first-class and 6 second-class Awards of Scientific and Technology Progress in China. He has 12 authorized national invention patents. He chaired 5 international and national academic conferences. He is the author of 4 Chinese monographs and 1 English monograph. He gave 15 invited keynote speeches. He published 99 papers in the Science Citation Index (SCI) international journals and 198 papers in the Engineering Index (EI) journals. He edited the first Technical Code for Recycled Aggregate Concrete in PR China, and he is Chairman of RILEM TC for Structural Behaviour and Innovation of Recycled Aggregate Concrete and the current director of the Recycled Aggregate Concrete Committee in PR China.

Yuanfeng Wang

Beijing Jiaotong University

Topic titled: "The Basic Performance of Concrete Creep”

Wang Yuanfeng is a Professor at Beijing Jiaotong University. Dr. Wang is the director of the Sustainable Civil Engineering Committee of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies, and he has served a member of the China Highway Society.

Dr. Wang pursues a broad range of research interests, including long-term behaviors of concrete material and structures, dynamic properties and damping of concrete and confined concrete, green buildings and prefabricated buildings, and quantitative sustainability assessment of civil engineering and infrastructures, etc. Dr. Wang is the author of three academic monographs, and two additional monographs will be published by the China Science Press. He has published more than 230 journal and conference papers including more than 60 papers in prestigious international journals and two comment articles in Nature. He owned 13 software copyrights and 2 patents in China. He served as the committee member of 5 China’s national code committees. Dr. Wang was the executive chairman of the 559th Xiangshan Science Conference, with the theme "Challenge and Technology Path for the Sustainable Development of Civil Engineering" and the S42 Xiangshan Science Conference, with the theme "The Internet and the Future Education".  In addition, he was also the executive chairman of the 599th Xiangshan Science Conference with the theme "Improving Science and Technology Assessment, and Boosting Innovation-driven Development".

Dr. Wang is also a writer and poet, and he has published 2 novels describing young Chinese intellectuals’ life and thinking in 1995 and 2001, respectively. He has published a poetry anthology, The Trumpets in Storm, in 2014. He frequently writes comment articles on science, education, sustainability, the economy as well as world affairs for some influential Chinese newspapers. He has published more than 180 articles in newspapers such as the People’s Daily in China and United Morning Post in Singapore. The articles were widely quoted and reprinted by People's Daily, Xinhuanet.com, UN website, New York Times, and other famous websites from domestic and abroad.
